August 14, 2003

Oki Electric Industry Co., Ltd. (TSE: 6703) today released its Environmental Report 2003. The report released on Oki's web page(http://www.oki.com/en/eco/ecoreport/ ) describes the environmental protection activities implemented by Oki Electric and its group companies during the fiscal year ended March 31, 2003.

"We are pleased to release our Environmental Report 2003 to the world community. This release marks the fifth report of Oki's efforts and achievements toward the development of environment-friendly businesses and company's goal of earning the understanding and trust of citizens and governmental agencies," said Masayoshi Ino, Executive Vice President at Oki Electric, responsible for all of the Oki group's environmental protection strategies.

This year Oki issues two types of report; the Environmental Report 2003 and the individual Site Environmental Reports. While the Environmental Report explains the summary of the company's various environmental activities during the year, the Site Environmental Reports issued by each main business location explain the environment burden data and the unique activities at each site in detail that are designed to protect the local environment. By issuing two types of report, Oki meets its stakeholders' needs and makes it easier for readers to comprehend.

The company set Oki Eco Plan 21 in September 1999, as an environment protective activity plan, giving high priority to such activities in its corporate management strategies throughout all of its group companies. In the fiscal year ended March 2003, Oki achieved zero emissions at all major manufacturing plants in Japan, two years ahead of schedule, and reduced by 75% the amount finally processed relative to the previous fiscal year.

Compared to the fiscal year ended March 2002, Oki reduced its environmental expenditures by seven hundred million yen in the fiscal year ended March 2003. These savings were realized through various activities which include the reduction of three million yen in the waste disposal costs incurred by its plants and a gain of 130 million yen on the sales of scrap iron, sulfuric acid waste, and wafer waste. Oki also reduced its CO2 gas emissions by 2400 tons.

Other major initiatives implemented by the Oki group during the last fiscal year and the results thereof are given below:

1. Released the Oki Green Procurement Manual. The manual complies with the Guidelines for Standardization of Material Declaration promoted by Japan Electronics and Information Technology Industries Association (JEITA).

2. Achieved a 100% green purchase record by integrating the Oki group's 55 companies' consumable purchase system and lowering the number of items purchased to 1500 products, in accord with the guidelines of the Oki Green Procurement Manual.

3. Implemented tree-thinning projects using volunteer work at Naka Izu in Shizuoka and at Gunma Prefecture in Japan.

4. Improved the recycling rate of used products to 88.2%.

5. Reduced CO2 emissions by 500 tons by revising semiconductor logistics.

6. Completed the response of lead-free solder for electronic devices
